I grew up playing Dominoes. My grandfather taught me one summer when I went to visit family in Topeka, KS. I can remember strategizing on how to obtain scores with a multiple of 5.
If you are not familiar, you have to match the numbers by placing a new domino adjacent to a corresponding number. Pieces are played in a portrait fashion, except for the double numbers. They are played in a landscape fashion. Scoring: Look at the last domino (in each direction), and add the values that on the ends of each domino. In order to obtain a score, the ends have to be a multiple of 5. For example, on one end you can have a double six and on the other end you can have a 3. Your score is 15.
How to use in a Math Class:
- Multiples of 5 (skip counting)
- Fractions (add, subtract, multiply, divide, and simplify)
- Converting fractions to decimals and/or percents
- Comparing and ordering fractions and/or decimals.
- Put them in a Learning Center
- Use during Indoor Recess
- Use during small group
Double Dice are dice within a die. We call them number cubes or random number generators because of the negative connotation of the word "dice".
Ways you can use Double Number Cubes.

- Simplifying fractions
- Comparing and ordering fractions
- Converting fractions to decimals and percents
- Plotting points on a coordinate grid
- Assigning students to specific tables
- Add, subtract, multiply, or divide integers (inside cube = negative, outside cube = positive)
Fraction Towers are a manipulative that have many uses.
They are labeled with fractions, decimals, and percents on the sides of the tower. Generally, they come in a rainbow of colors so the students can easily differentiate among the values.
