Sumdog

ENGAGING, EVIDENCED-BASED LEARNING...
"Sumdog provides engaging adaptive learning for K-8 math, K-6 spelling, and K-5 grammar.
Our powerful learning engine adapts questions for each individual. It's aligned to the Common Core and key state standards. Meanwhile, our engaging activities are designed to motivate all students to learn.
Our aim is to close the achievement gap - by helping every student reach their full potential."

I love how the there are games are adaptive and the faster and the more accurate the students are, the games adjust. The students can even play against one another.
They even have Reading, Writing, and Spelling components.

There is an App. Unfortunately the games don't work on a tablet through the internet. You have to go through the App. But it is web-based.

Dominoes

I grew up playing Dominoes. My grandfather taught me one summer when I went to visit family in Topeka, KS. I can remember strategizing on how to obtain scores with a multiple of 5.

If you are not familiar, you have to match the numbers by placing a new domino adjacent to a corresponding number. Pieces are played in a portrait fashion, except for the double numbers. They are played in a landscape fashion. Scoring: Look at the last domino (in each direction), and add the values that on the ends of each domino. In order to obtain a score, the ends have to be a multiple of 5.  For example, on one end you can have a double six and on the other end you can have a 3. Your score is 15.

How to use in a Math Class:

  • Multiples of 5 (skip counting)
  • Fractions (add, subtract, multiply, divide, and simplify)
  • Converting fractions to decimals and/or percents
  • Comparing and ordering fractions and/or decimals.
  • Put them in a Learning Center
  • Use during Indoor Recess
  • Use during small group

QR Codes

I love to use QR codes in my class. My first time using QR Codes with my class was awesome. I bought a "Find Someone Who" Activity from Teachers Pay Teachers. It was well worth the $2.25. I posted the cards around the class and the students had to use their devices to scan the QR Code. The code revealed who the students had to find. For example, Find someone who brings their lunch. Be sure there is a QR Code Reader on the device. There are tons of free Apps. Some iPhones even let you scan QR Codes with the camera.

I have posted the QR Code that links to my Exit Ticket and one that links to my Teacher-Student Conference Form. So the students just have to scan the code and it'll take the student to my form.

You can Google a QR Code Generator and create your own QR Codes. Usually, you can create a website, text, image, phone number, among others. You can have it linked to an answer key to your learning centers.

The opportunities are endless.
